Aoife McDermott

Aoife McDermottAoife is an Irish Senior Women’s basketball player, who has been involved in basketball since age 12 after discovering the sport at a local summer camp. She has since had many successes both on and off the court.

Aoife struggled with reading and spelling throughout her school-life, but at a young age, she discovered that sport could help her to overcome these difficulties by improving her focus and determination to succeed. This has led to her graduating from college with a nursing degree and studying further for her Masters degree.

Despite a love for Basketball, she struggled to make friends and considered giving up very early on. However, she quickly learnt that hard work and commitment would help her achieve great things in her sporting career.

Setting her sights on becoming an international basketball player, Aoife began training harder and went to her first international trials just one year after taking up the sport. Although the trails didn’t go as she had hoped, the experience gave her the hunger to achieve her goals.

She returned to trials the following year and embarked on an intensive two year training program, in which she successfully joined the U-16 Irish team.

She successfully represented her country at all under-age levels and captained her country in an Irish select women’s team. Aoife has won 16 All-Ireland titles with her club and college teams and competed at the European Championships in 2016.

Aoife became an Athlete Mentor in 2015 and is looking forward to using her experience to help inspire young people. She comments: “Basketball has shaped my life and taught me so many life skills. Achieving your goals, no matter how big or small, is possible if you’re willing to put in the work”.
