Darren O’Neill

Darren O'Neill

Darren has been a member of the Irish Boxing Team since its inception in 2003.  He began at junior level before advancing to senior level and becoming team captain. Darren boxes out of his home club, Paulstown Boxing Club.

Born in County Kilkenny, he is the eldest of three boys. He first developed an interest in boxing from his dad Ollie, who boxed over 300 bouts and now trains him and his brothers. Darren also grew up with an interest in hurling and played in and won All-Ireland medals with his secondary school St.Kieran’s College and county Kilkenny. Darren has won Best Boxer at junior, U21 and senior level through the years.

He also completed a humanities degree in geography and human development, followed by post-graduate studies in education. He is currently studying for an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) while working part-time as a primary school teacher. With such a hectic schedule, Darren has learnt to apply many of the skills he has gained through sport to organise his career.

Despite being a successful sportsman and multi-medal winner, Darren has had to face and overcome injury and losses throughout his career at crucial stages. However, Darren’s hunger to achieve means he continues to strive in his sport and is now experimenting at a new, higher weight class.
