Thomas Barr

Thomas was an active child and started playing sport from an early age. He took up athletics at age 8 and having tried every sport available at his school, soon decided that athletics would be the sport he stuck at.

By the age of 17, he started to become disheartened with his athletic performances despite the sacrifices he made for it. Thomas contemplated quitting athletics in order to fully enjoy his time at college. However, following a conversation with his parents he decided to give athletics one more shot.

In a new environment, under new coaches and new-found hunger to achieve, Thomas trained hard through the winter and improved vastly come summer. He broke the Irish Junior record, became national senior champion, and finished 6th at the European Junior championships.

Since 2010, despite suffering injury, Thomas has managed to break the Irish Senior, U23 and Junior records in his event. He is four-time national champion in the 400m hurdles and has represented Ireland multiple times in underage and senior competitions.

2014 was his most successful year to date. Whilst balancing his final year of studying and training, he broke the Irish Senior Record for 400m hurdles, ranking himself first in Europe at the time and was part of the national record breaking 4x400m relay team at the 2014 European championships. He finished 2014 sitting fifth in European rankings, 16th in World rankings and topped it off with a First Class Honours degree.

In 2016, Thomas became an Olympian when he competed in the 400m hurdles at the Rio Olympics. He finished fourth in the final, narrowly missing out on a medal and setting a national record in the process.

Thomas joined Sky Sports Living for Sport as an Athlete Mentor in 2015 and commented: “Athletics has helped shape me as a person and changed my life in a positive manner. Sky Sports Living for Sport gives me the opportunity to share my experiences with the hope of inspiring and motivating the next generation of young adults to realise their potential, live life to the full and fulfil their aspirations.
