Darren Campbell brings athletics to life for students from Essex
- Tue 21st Mar '17
It’s been an exciting day here at Sky Academy as Olympic Gold Medallist Darren Campbell gave the students of Chelmsford County High School for Girls a fast-paced athletics masterclass.
The school from Essex won the chance to take part in a training session with Darren after their teacher, Sarah Bellamy, planned a Sky Sports Living for Sport project in 2016.
The students were also lucky enough to be joined by two of our brilliant Athlete Mentors in their masterclass – Tim Prendergast and Daniel Caines - who supported Darren on the day and shared their top tips on the all-important topic of ‘how not to drop the baton’ when under lots of pressure in a relay race! It was brilliant to see the girls putting their skills to the test later in the session with a baton-passing race.
A real highlight of the day for the students, was the opportunity to hear both Tim and Daniel’s own inspirational stories. It’s always special to hear role models like Tim and Daniel take the time to motivate and encourage the students, letting them know that nothing can stop them from achieving their very best.
We managed to catch up with Darren after the masterclass, where he said: “I’ve had a great day today inspiring the students from Chelmsford County High School and have really seen how being part of Sky Sports Living for Sport has built their confidence so they believe anything is possible”.
Sky Sports Game Changers even stopped by to capture the action. Highlights from Darren’s masterclass will be available to watch in May, just in time to get some tips for sports day. Keep an eye out for updates on our Twitter and Facebook pages.
Sky Sports Living for Sport, part of Sky Academy, is a completely free experience available to all secondary schools across the UK and Ireland, in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust. Bringing schools and inspirational role models together, it’s supported by our people who volunteer and well known faces from our TV Channels, to offer a range of opportunities.
Schools can still sign-up and get involved with Sky Sports Living for Sport for the 2016/17 academic year here. Remember, any school that submits a project plan between now and Tuesday 4 April will also be entered into a free prize draw to bring their students down to Sky for our Celebration Day this June - find out more here!
