Charlotte Dale - 2010/2011 North West Regional Finalist

Charlotte Dale and a group of her peers from Macclesfield Academy were encouraged to participate in Sky Sports Living for Sport. House Leader Dave Dolman registered the pupils for the initiative as he believed sport could be used as a means of increasing the pupils’ self-esteem and confidence in physical activities and, in turn, improve the school’s competitive record. Previously Macclesfield Academy had been unsuccessful in sports matches and was keen to turn this around.

Charlotte was a very timid yet quietly determined pupil. She was a member of the netball and rounders teams which had lost continuously for three years, yet she still turned up for training every time. Following the visit from Athlete Mentors Natasha Jonas and Nicola Minichiello, as well as the sports training and guidance made available through the project, Charlotte felt more motivated, inspired and determined to succeed.

Volleyball was introduced as a school sport for the first time to the project group who worked tirelessly to improve their game. Much to the disbelief of other local schools, the Macclesfield Academy Sky Sports Living for Sport team entered the district championships and won. They then went on to win the county finals and Charlotte won the Player of the Tournament Award.

As a result of her involvement in Sky Sports Living for Sport, Charlotte has blossomed. Not only have her skills and confidence improved but she is an inspiration for those around her. She is now captain of a number of sports teams and is a regular sport leader at primary school events. Her positive mental attitude is infectious and she regularly talks to large groups of pupils and encourages them to get involved in sport.  One member of the project group spoke very little English and Charlotte took it upon herself to ensure she remained involved and felt part of the group. It is this sort of sensitivity and respect for others that indicates the kind person Charlotte is.

The girls have also gone on to succeed in other sports including the first badminton victory the school has ever had.  Add to this their netball and rounders victories and the team has had the most successful sporting year in the school’s history.

Dave Dolman, House Leader at Macclesfield Academy commented: “Charlotte has flourished during the Sky Sports Living for Sport project; she is far more confident and outgoing and has developed her sports skills immeasurably. She is a great role model to other students and deserves this recognition for her progress.”
